Low, at its core, was the musical project of the Duluth-based couple of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker. The band formed in 1993 partially as an experiment to see what would happen, in an age where volume and harshness were the main traits of alternative music, if they bucked the trend and played very quiet, and very slow. With the aid of multiple bassists over the years, they played intimate shows that steadily attracted a devoted worldwide following who held great appreciation for their flavor of more thoughtful and emotional indie rock, which was dubbed as "slowcore" by music critics of the time. Even as the band evolved and experimented with their sound, culminating in their final recordings being swallowed by washes of noise, the songwriting and vocal harmonies of Alan and Mimi remained a beautiful, heart-rending constant. The band dissolved in 2022 when Mimi died of cancer, leaving behind a nearly 30-year long legacy of incredible music.
