The Michipicoten has arrived at Fraser Shipyard in Superior, Wisconsin after nearly sinking in the middle of Lake Superior on June 8th. Crowds lined both sides of the Duluth ship canal when the Laker arrived around 11PM Thursday night under tug escort. Cheers erupted when the boat and bridge exchanged salutes. The Michipicoten quickly developed a 15-degree list after suffering a 13-foot crack caused by structural failure while transiting Lake Superior southwest of Isle Royale fully loaded with taconite. Half the crew was removed, and ballast pumps were able to keep up with the flooding while the Michipicoten made a run for Thunder Bay. Upon arrival, the taconite cargo was offloaded, and a temporary patch applied to the crack. The Michipicoten will be dry docked, surveyed and repaired while at Fraser Shipyard.
